The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced that it plans to carry out a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) checkpoint on December 29, although the location within the parish has yet to be disclosed. The aim of the checkpoint is to detect and deter individuals who are driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. The practice has shown effective results in discouraging impaired driving as people tend to appoint a designated driver when they are aware such checkpoints are in place. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is funding this checkpoint.
