An event took place in Orange County at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11 in the hamlet of Campbell Hall, Hamptonburgh. Details from the investigation indicate that State troopers from New York and a deputy from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were aiding a stranded tractor-trailer on Route 207 in Campbell Hall. The deputy was handling the traffic when a Toyota Corolla, driven by Robert Garton (54) from Chester, illegally overtook stationary vehicles and did not heed the deputy’s instruction to stop, nearly hitting him, said Trooper Steven Nevel. Subsequently, Garton drove his vehicle in reverse and headed east on 207 before being stopped by the troopers. On questioning him, the troopers realized Garton was driving under the influence of alcohol. Consequently, Garton was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and issued a summons to appear before the Town of Hamptonburgh Court.
