DUI Suspected in Wrong-Way Crash on State Route 163

Teams worked to rescue a driver involved in a head-on collision which had been caused by driving in the wrong direction. The accident occurred on state Route 163 in Hillcrest, with a driver subsequently being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. The suspect, a male who was driving a white Mazda 3 and wearing only shorts, was reported to be on the wrong side of the southbound lanes at around 3:25 a.m. when he crashed into a black Toyota Camry carrying four occupants, as per OnScene.TV. This incident was reported to the California Highway Patrol just minutes prior, informing them of a vehicle heading north in the southbound lanes near Robinson Avenue. Rescue teams from San Diego Fire-Rescue had to remove one patient from the crash site, where both drivers were unconscious at the time. Following the accident, all southbound lanes from Washington Street to Robinson were closed for over an hour, including the Robinson onramp. The injured victims were taken to diverse hospitals, including Scripps Mercy, leading to the later arrest of the Mazda driver.
