During a special City Council session on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, District 10 Councilmember Marc Whyte was seen consulting with Mayor Ron Nirenberg. Whyte, aged 43, was later arrested for erratic driving and suspected drunkenness. He declined to take a breathalyzer test or a blood alcohol test, necessitating the police to obtain a court order for the blood test, which was conducted at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The previous District 10 councilman, Clayton Perry, was also involved in a drink-related incident, reportedly consuming 14 alcoholic drinks before a hit-and-run accident. This led to a vote of no confidence from the council and his eventual return to office after a two-month leave of absence.
It is unclear how the council will approach the allegations against Whyte, but the Mayor did not condone Whyte’s behavior and noted that a decision would be made after uncovering more details. Whyte released a statement claiming he had never driven drunk and admitted, in another interview, that he was wrong to have driven after drinking. Despite this, he is backed by various former District 10 councilmen who are waiting for the full details of the case.
Whyte’s arrest came after he returned from Australia, and he blames it partly on jet lag. He was charged with a first-offense DWI, a misdemeanor, and was released on a $2,000 bail.
