4th APD Officer Tied to DWI Scheme Resigns

For the second time in just one week, an Albuquerque police officer has resigned during a federal investigation into the department’s DWI unit. Nelson Ortiz, the officer in question, tendered his resignation on Thursday. This event occurred just a day after another officer linked to the investigation also stepped down. The investigators had tried to organize an interview with Ortiz prior to his resignation. Ortiz is the fourth officer from the APD to resign over the DWI unit investigation. He joined the force in 2016, served the DWI Unit from 2018 through 2021, and then was transferred and has been in the Motors Unit since 2021. Earlier this year, the APD had placed Ortiz and a few others on administrative leave after the FBI began investigating an alleged plot between the APD DWI Unit and a local lawyer. As of now, there are no charges against anyone.
