The most severe consequences of DUI crashes are the tragic loss of lives, destroyed families, and grave injuries. However, in Utah, offenders might face a significant increase in their penalties – it could rise by tenfold or even more. As per Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, the average DUI offense currently costs around $10,000. He stated, “The fines could potentially escalate to several hundred thousand dollars depending on the victims of the crash. For instance, if the person killed is a young parent or children.” Eliason is proposing two bills aimed at increasing DUI penalties. One advocates for increased jail time for repeat offenders, while the other demands that the offender financially compensate the victims’ families.
