Hesperia Man Arrested for DUI, Crashes into Utility Pole on Santa Fe Ave

A 40-year-old man named Matthew Varner was apprehended for driving under the influence (DUI) in Hesperia, California when his black 2005 Dodge Ram crashed into a utility pole, causing its destruction, on December 20, 2023. The incident, which happened at about 9:32 pm, resulted in the vehicle spiraling out of control, skidding off the road and falling into an earth embankment where it hit a wooden utility pole. The severity of the collision completely devastated the pole, subsequently leading to the collapse of the overhead power lines.

After investigating, the man, a Victorville resident, was found to be intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested and put in the High Desert Detention Center for exceeding the blood alcohol limit of 0.08 Percent as per VC23152 A & B DUI Alcohol. Varner was released from jail on the next morning, based on his booking records.

The mishap led to Southern California Edison dispatching work crews immediately for carrying out essential repair work. The event resulted in Santa Fe Avenue East being shut down in both directions for several hours. The ongoing probe into the collision is being managed by the Hesperia Police Department.
