On Saturday, Galesburg Police responded to a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of North Farnham and Summit Streets at approximately 8:00 am. Upon reaching the site, they found a Nissan sedan parked on the terrace, crashed against a fence. The male driver was discovered asleep at the wheel. Police officers turned off the vehicle and noticed many beer cans scattered near his feet and cup holders. The 23-year-old driver smelled strongly of alcohol and showed several signs of being under the influence after agreeing to a field sobriety test. During a vehicle search, police found a duffle bag full of unopened beer cans on the front passenger seat and a bag with what they suspected to be cocaine in the center console. The driver’s breathalyzer test at the Public Safety Building recorded a BAC of .218, over two and a half times the legal limit. He was subsequently taken to Knox County Jail and charged with DUI A1, DUI A2, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
