Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) has issued an official statement regarding the recent arrest of three off-duty firefighters for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in separate instances over the past two weeks. The firefighters involved, Angelo Abeyta, Rane Hanni, and Mateo Keyohara, have subsequently been suspended pending investigation.
AFR takes off-duty matters seriously and does not regard the actions of the three individuals as representative of the mission, standards, or expectations of the department, according to Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo. The department is said to be conducting an internal investigation and is reportedly fully cooperating with law enforcement. No additional information can be provided by the department at present due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Angelo Abeyta was pulled over by Rio Rancho Police Department on March 13th, 2024 for suspected driving under influence. The driver exhibited signs of impairment that alerted police officers and consented to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), which showed signs of impairment. He was thus arrested but presumed innocent until confirmed guilty.
Rane Hanni was the subject of an arrest on March 17, 2024, by the Albuquerque Police Department. Hanni was pulled over for making an improper turn around a sobriety checkpoint. Upon interaction, officers detected signs of alcohol intoxication, which after sobriety tests led to his arrest. His refusal to take a breath test led to an aggravated DWI charge. Like Abeyta, Hanni is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
Lastly, Mateo Keyohara, who was seen driving recklessly on March 22, 2024, was pulled over and showed signs of intoxication. After failing field sobriety tests, Keyohara was arrested. His blood-alcohol content was found to be double the legal limit, leading to an aggravated DWI charge. He, too, remains innocent until proven guilty.
In conclusion, Abeyta, Hanni, and Keyohara are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
