A 22-year-old man from Hazelwood was detained by Eureka Police under the suspicion of intoxicated driving and causing property damage. He allegedly provoked the officers, hit a police vehicle near a QuikTrip gas station at 290 E. Fourth St, and then fled from the scene. Post-arrest the case was handed over to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, according to Capt. Michael Werges.
On Feb. 22, around 4:25 p.m., while two officers were refueling their patrol vehicles at the gas station, they noticed the man who was behaving oddly while talking to himself in a 2013 Kia Optima at a nearby pump. He moved the car near the convenience store when the officers directed their attention towards him.
Interpreting his behavior as unusual, the officers parked their vehicles behind the Optima. The man seemed unresponsive and appeared to be under the influence when an officer approached him. When the officer tried to converse with him after opening the Optima’s door, the man quickly reversed from the parking spot.
The open car door forced the officer to jump aside and bent when he drove off, hitting one of the police cars and causing minor damage. The officers later intercepted the Optima at the intersection of Legends Parkway and Bald Hill Road, arrested the driver and brought him to the Police Station. Post booking, he was released while charges were pending.
In light of the fact that the incident involved the arresting officers, the case was turned over to the Highway Patrol. Capt. Werges informed that the Highway Patrol is planning to press charges through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for DWI and property damage against the man.
