The Chairman of the Rockland County Republican party, Lawrence Garvey, has been apprehended for allegedly driving under the influence. This occurred when he failed to pass field sobriety tests and declined to take a Breathalyzer test during a traffic stop in Westchester County, as per court documents.
Garvey, a 57-year-old lawyer and party frontman, was pulled over for a broken brake light on his 2022 Audi while travelling on the interstate in Elmsford village at approximately 5 p.m. on December 3, according to state authorities. He claims to have been returning from an event and heading home to New City.
It is not clear which event he participated in. However, the traffic arrest took place on the same day as a fundraiser in Westchester for fellow Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, hosted at 2:30 p.m. at the Bronxville home of a key figure from the Trump administration. The event was attended by House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Garvey and his lawyer Steven Epstein did not offer any statement or comment on the arrest. According to documents from the Elmsford village court, Garvey’s driver’s license was suspended for 15 days from January 17 due to his refusal to take the Breathalyzer test. He is expected to appear in court again next Wednesday.
On his way to Rockland County, Garvey was pulled over on the I-287. The officer on duty reported that Garvey exhibited signs of alcohol consumption, as denoted by his slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and alcoholic odor. Garvey’s performance on the sobriety tests was reportedly lacking, with difficulties in coordination and maintaining balance, stated the trooper.
Garvey has served as the Rockland County Republican Committee head for nearly ten years, elected to the position in 2014 by committee members following former leader Vinny Reda’s departure. Recently, he attempted to climb the Republican party ladder to state leadership, but eventually withdrew his bid.
