According to the California Highway Patrol, a fatal car accident in Martinez claimed the life of a young child and left another injured early Sunday morning.
The investigating officers have found that the car, for an unknown reason, veered off the road and hit a tree. The accident occurred on State Route 4 westbound, somewhere west of Morello Avenue as stated by the CHP.
At the time of the crash, the vehicle had three persons inside. A child of 5 years who did not have the proper car seat security was declared dead at the scene. An 11-year-old was hospitalized with serious injuries. The person driving the vehicle, also injured, was subsequently taken to the hospital and later arrested on charges of suspected DUI and manslaughter.
There is no official statement connecting the children in the car to the driver. However, a witness at the scene, Candice Turner, said, “The mom is okay, I was talking to her for a little, but she’s okay.”
CHP advises drivers to adhere to the speed limits, use seatbelts, and drive cautiously.
