Almine Rech London is excited to present an exhibition of the most recent works by Roby Dwi Antono, spanning from January 11 to February 17, 2024. In the 2010s, Yogyakarta, the cultural capital city of Indonesia, witnessed a revolution in art spearheaded by a generation of young Indonesian artists. They brought to the fore a novel genre of art that seamlessly merged Pop Surrealism and lowbrow art with pervasive influences on the style of modern painters.
There was a surge in a community that was inspired by a multitude of subcultures such as pop culture, indie movements, lowbrow art, street-style fashion, and more. This reflected the dawn of post-Reformation youth culture in Indonesia. Roby Dwi Antono was one such artist who chose an unconventional path distinguished by his self-tutored background and distinctive style.
This solo exhibition will represent Roby’s works that resulted from his transformation into a father following his daughter, Laut’s birth in July 2023. His new perspective as a parent and a member of his family and community altered his creative expression, exhibiting robust, raw strokes and vivid colors derived from his domestic life.
Roby’s artistic transition from Pop Surrealism to Naïve Figurative style in 2022 marked a profound turn, notably reflected in his exhibit ‘Rumpus’ in Tokyo. His changed outlook on life, personal decisions, as well as his mindfulness and presence towards the simple aspects of life like breathing and feeling the pulse, continued to influence his work.
Through the show, Roby Dwi Antono: TUK, he aims to exhibit the evolution of his perception as an artist, influenced by the obstacles faced by his own family. The exhibition is scheduled to commence on January 11th, 2024 and will run till February 17th, 2024, at Almine Rech London.
