Jeffrey Sharps, the fire chief of Truro Township in eastern Franklin County, Ohio, has been issued a citation for speeding and driving while under the influence in Licking County. The Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled over Sharps at 10 p.m. on February 6 on State Route 16, noting that he was driving at 64 mph in a 45-mph zone. Sharps, unresponsive to questioning about his origin, exhibited signs of intoxication including a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. His conduct during the sobriety tests led to his arrest as he showed difficulties in balancing and remembering instructions. Despite claiming that he had consumed only two cans of beer, Sharps declined to take a breathalyzer test. He pleaded not guilty during the arraignment hearing on February 8. As of now, no future court dates have been set. Sharps, who has been serving with the Truro Township Fire Department since 2012, was promoted to the position of chief in 2018. The trustees of Truro Township remained silent on the issue when contacted for a comment.
