When police arrived at the location of the reported two-vehicle accident that took place near Speonk Riverhead Road on Friday around 9:10 p.m, they discovered a driver had escaped on foot into nearby woods.
Later, the police were successful in tracking down and arresting the suspect in the woods. The perpetrator was identified as 31-year-old Alex Cano-Arriega. The police report confirmed he was drunk and found with an amount of cocaine in his possession. This resulted in his charging with several misdemeanors, namely, Driving While Intoxicated, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (Seventh Degree), and Fleeing an Accident Scene.
Cano-Arriega was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of an injured hand, released thereafter, and given a court appearance ticket for a later date, as per the police.
