Officials have filed several new charges against a father involved in a fatal car crash east of Rocky Mount in Edgecombe County, which resulted in the death of his son and two other individuals. The accident occurred on U.S. 64 Alternate near Kingsboro Road, west of Tarboro and approximately 8 miles east of Rocky Mount, according to Trooper Chandler Blackwell from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The driver, Jerry Lee Pollard from Tarboro, reportedly lost control of his car due to speeding and collided with a westbound pickup truck. Three out of the five passengers in the Saturn Vue Pollard was driving were thrown clear from the vehicle during the accident. Initially, Pollard was charged with driving while intoxicated.
The crash claimed the lives of Pollard’s 19-year-old son, Jeremy Pollard, along with 19-year-old Jhawaiun Drake, and 34-year-old Brittany Marie Armstrong. Apart from the DWI charge, Pollard now faces additional charges including three counts of felony death by motor vehicle, one count of felony serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and left of centre, as well as the original charges of driving while intoxicated and speeding.
During the crash, Armstrong was trapped inside the Saturn and subsequently died. Morgan Page, a 30-year-old from Tarboro, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. She survived and is currently in critical condition at Vidant Pitt Hospital. The 61-year-old man who was driving the pickup truck that Pollard hit sustained minor injuries.
