A man from Franklin, New Hampshire has been accused of being under the influence while operating a boat, following a canoeing incident that endangered his two young children.
The Franklin Police Department received a call around 4 p.m. on Friday regarding a soaked man, identified as Michael Stewart, screaming for help near the Franklin Library. Upon arrival, it was determined that the man had been canoeing with his children when their boat capsized, submerging him and his two children in the freezing water.
Sgt. Walker, one of the responding officers, immediately jumped into the water to rescue the children, aged 3 and 5. One child was transported by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, while the other was brought to Concord Hospital at Franklin for medical attention.
The child at Franklin was responsive and interactive; however, the case of the other child remains unclear. Post-rescue, Walker was also medically evaluated for hypothermia.
The authorities asserted that Stewart had been driving under the influence and charged him accordingly. They also anticipate additional charges to be made.
