A police officer from Chicago, named Tangie Brown, was arrested on Monday due to her involvement in a fatal pedestrian accident that happened in downtown Chicago in early December. The officer is being charged with multiple felonies, including aggravated DUI, and several misdemeanors.

40-year-old Brown was taken into custody at the 2nd District police station and had her court hearing on Tuesday. The charges she’s facing include a felony charge for aggravated DUI leading to a death, a felony charge for aggravated use of a communication device leading to death, two misdemeanor charges for failing to provide information and assist at the scene of an injury, and a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving.

In addition to these charges, Brown also received citations for failing to reduce speed and improper use of lanes. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the fatal accident happened around 12:30 a.m. on December 7th. Brown apparently dropped her phone and looked away from the road to pick it up, causing her to swerve upon realizing she might hit a median, and crashed into two women from Texas.

The collision resulted in the death of 56-year-old Maria Schwab and left a 37-year-old woman with bruises and a cut; she was treated at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Following the incident, the local police suspended Brown’s police duties on the same day.
