Austin Teaching Assistant Charged with DWI, Had Kids in Car

Ralph Patrick Hutchens, a teacher assistant from an elementary school in Austin, was arrested for drunk driving with three children aboard. Hutchens, 37, works as a physical education teacher’s assistant at Summit Elementary School and was apprehended by New Braunfels police on Sunday, Feb. 11. The arrest followed multiple 911 calls reporting a white Dodge Journey driving recklessly on northbound I-35. After conducting field sobriety tests on Hutchens, the police took him into custody. The three female passengers, aged 9 and 11, were handed over to their families. Hutchens was taken to a local hospital for blood sampling and was later lodged into Comal County Jail on charges of driving under the influence with a child under 15. He was also captured in a booking photo. The Austin Independent School District has since put Hutchens on administrative leave awaiting an investigation, with the possibility of more charges being lodged against him, according to police.
