Sheriff Craig Webre of Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office disclosed details of seat belt and DWI checkpoints that will be set up on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, within Lafourche Parish. These are aimed at increasing public awareness regarding such violations and enhancing the safety of all road users in the parish.
The seat belt checkpoints to be carried out on Wednesday evening will involve deputies examining drivers for adherence to seat belts and child safety seat regulations. After these, the DWI checkpoints will commence the same evening, extending till the early hours of the following Thursday, March 21, 2024. Here, the deputies will be on the lookout for potentially impaired drivers whilst monitoring for other traffic safety violations.
Sheriff Webre urges residents to nominate a designated driver if they plan to consume alcohol. Any motorist who declines a breathalyzer test whilst suspected of DWI will have their driver’s license revoked for one year on their first offense. A second violation carries a two-year penalty. If a person is convicted of a DWI while their driver’s license is suspended from a previous DWI, they will face obligatory imprisonment. Lafourche Parish enforces a “No Refusal” policy which warrants the issuance of a search warrant to test a person’s blood, should they decline a breathalyzer test under suspicion of drunk driving.
