A sergeant from the Miami Gardens Police, Andrea Rhodesia Smith, has been detained due to charges of DUI and reckless driving. The 38-year old was jailed in Miami-Dade early on a Thursday, as indicated by the records.
The arrest report says that a patrolling officer spotted a white Mercedes speeding around Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 183rd Street around 2 am. The car was seen negligently crossing a red light and speeding through another.
When the officer stopped the car and inspected the driver, he found Smith with watery, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol on her breath. While the officer called for a supervisor and Miramar Police for support in conducting field sobriety tests, Smith denied undergoing the tests and providing a breath sample.
Smith was afterwards arrested and incarcerated, but there’s no available information about her lawyer yet.
Miami Gardens Police Chief, Delma Noel-Pratt, informed news reporters that Smith has been with the department for around nine years and worked as a sergeant for over two years. Assuring that their officers are held to the highest level of accountability both on and off duty, Noel-Pratt stated that Smith’s actions are not reflective of their agency’s standards and that she would be dismissed from her duties and given due process.
