In the early hours of Sunday morning, Craig Hilgenberg, 37, was arrested in Polk County, Florida under suspicion of drunk driving. The arrest came about after the Florida Highway Patrol spotted Hilgenberg driving in the wrong direction on I-4.
Hilgenberg, hailing from Dover, was noted by the patrol around 1:29 a.m., going eastwards in the westbound lanes of I-4. He was driving a red Honda Accord and passed by the trooper even with the patrol’s lights and sirens turned on.
The patrol’s video footage shows Hilgenberg outpacing the patrol car, necessitating the trooper’s attempt to have him pull over. FHP reports that the trooper made two attempts at a PIT maneuver, with the second one successfully stopping Hilgenberg on the inside shoulder of the median.
Following his arrest, Hilgenberg was taken into the patrol car and was later noted to have a strong alcohol smell and exhibited slurred speech. He was then transported to the Polk County Jail, where he vomited in the parking lot, giving off an even stronger alcohol smell.
Observers note that Hilgenberg then turned down requests to take field sobriety tests and a breath test sample. As a result of the incident, FHP charged him with DUI influence of alcohol or drugs, and evading capture with complete disregard for the safety of other individuals and property.
