Odessa Woman Charged with Child-Involved Felony DWI

On January 15, 2024, the Sulphur Springs Police were summoned to a business on Como Street following a report about an unfamiliar vehicle. The informer recognized that the car was unfamiliar and the driver was not an employee of the business. The officers tried to halt the vehicle upon reaching the scene, but the driver seemed to have difficulty maneuvering the vehicle. Inside the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, the police noticed two open containers of alcohol alongside a two-year-old child in the back seat.

The driver, Gretell Suarez Negrin, displayed signs of inebriation, such as bloodshot eyes and a speech impediment. The officers requested Negrin to get out of the vehicle and conduct field sobriety tests, which she failed. Believing she was unfit to safely drive and with no other passengers other than the child, the police called a tow service to impound the car. The local Child Protective Services were informed to escort the child from the scene.

Negrin was subsequently taken to a local hospital as a warrant was obtained to conduct a blood test to determine the accurate blood alcohol concentration level. Negrin, who is 30, is currently detained at the Hopkins County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated with a child below 15, a state jail felony. Her bail is set at $100,000 for the charge.
