A five-year-old girl and her father were tragically killed in South Los Angeles just moments before the New Year as their family car was hit by a speeding driver, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department. The family of four was heading down Normandie Avenue around 11.30 pm when their car was T-boned by a speeding SUV after it ran a stop sign on 60th Place, according to LAPD’s South Traffic Division.
Onlookers said that the car spun twice before crashing into a sizable steel gate leading to a parking area. A nearby resident tried unsuccessfully to rescue the two children from the back seat. Firefighters had to free the family from the wreckage, the father was pronounced dead at the scene and his five-year-old daughter died later at the hospital. As of Monday, the mother remains in critical condition and the couple’s two-year-old daughter is fighting for her life in a pediatric intensive care unit.
A surveillance camera from a home on 60th Place showcased the speeding white SUV being followed by a red car. A cellphone video shows the driver of the red car telling police that the SUV had been driving rashly prior to the accident. LAPD confirmed that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The driver of the SUV, whose identity has not been released yet, also got injured and was taken to the hospital. He could potentially face murder charges.
Witnesses are being urged to contact LAPD’s South Traffic Division or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Members of the local community have called for a stoplight to be installed at the intersection where the crash took place due to frequent accidents occurring there.
