Smith County DWI Reports Over Christmas Weekend

The report states that between December 22 and December 28, police officers apprehended 24 individuals for drunk driving. This information emerged from a recent analysis of DWI cases during the holiday period in Smith County, Texas.

In order to reduce the incidence of drunk driving during the festive season, the Texas Department of Transportation has initiated its “Drive Sober. No Regrets” initiative. This measure ensures that from December 16 to January 2, the presence of law enforcement throughout Texas will be strengthened to deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.

TxDOT records indicate that during the previous year’s holiday period, 108 people died and over 200 suffered severe injuries due to alcohol-related crashes throughout the state.

Local police departments across Smith County, including the Tyler Police Department, have augmented their patrols to ensure public safety. According to Chief Jimmy Toler of the Tyler Police Department, the campaign also enhances public safety and enables Tyler residents and visitors to have safer New Year’s celebrations.

TxDOT further emphasizes that a DWI can result in a substantial financial burden, costing up to $17,000 in penalties and charges, potential jail time, loss of driving privileges, the possible loss of a job or difficulty in gaining employment, estrangement from loved ones, and lifelong regret.
