Nassau County District Attorney announced that 37-year-old Oscar Argueta is set to face a prison term of five to 12 years for his part in the car crash that occurred in June 2022. The Hicksville resident was under the influence and driving at a speed of 93 mph in his Dodge Durango on Greenwich Street in Hempstead before 2 a.m. on June 26, he collided with a Mercedes Benz G300 at the intersection of Curtis Avenue, carrying David Popoola aged 48 and his wife.
The impact caused the Mercedes Benz to hit the curb, causing it to overturn into a utility pole, leaving Popoola and his wife trapped within the vehicle. Popoola was declared dead on the spot. His wife sustained severe injuries, forcing her to undergo emergency surgery at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.
“The reckless actions of Oscar Argueta that morning on June 26, 2022, left a permanent mark on a family,” Anne T. Donnelly, DA stated, “taking away a caring husband and father to two young kids and leaving a gap in the hearts of numerous family and friends who adored him.”
In November 2023, Argueta admitted to several charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault, and drunk driving. The DA’s Office had recommended a sentence of seven to 21 years in prison.
