State police suspect that a man from Summit Hill was driving under the influence when he drove off a highway near Lansford, crashed into a tree, and rolled his car, injuring his passenger who later died in the hospital. The accident happened around 2am on Saturday on Route 209 near Andrewsville Road.
The driver, identified as 47-year-old James Carroll III, was driving a 2009 Nissan Maxima north on Route 209. The vehicle left the road, hit a tree, struck a guiderail, and then rolled. Both Carroll and his passenger, a 48-year-old man from Jim Thorpe whose name has not been released by the police, needed to be rescued by firefighters.
Carroll, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was seriously injured. His passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, died an hour after the crash from his injuries. Both victims were transported to local hospitals. Route 209 remained closed for six hours while state troopers carried out their investigations.
Other responders included firefighters from Lansford, Lehighton EMS, and Summit Hill Police. While Carroll is suspected of DUI, no charges have been filed related to the crash as of Sunday afternoon.
