Five police officers from the Albuquerque Police Department have resigned this year, amid an internal administrative investigation into misconduct involving driving while intoxicated (DWI). This includes the recent resignation of officers Joshua Montaño and Nelson Ortiz. In addition, the FBI is conducting a federal investigation into the police department’s handling of DWI cases, specifically regarding officers who failed to appear in court for scheduled hearings.
Two earlier resignations include APD Sgt. Justin Hunt and Officer Honorio Alba, who resigned in February. The police department has also placed a police commander on paid administrative leave during the ongoing investigations. Amid these investigations, Bernalillo County’s District Attorney Sam Bregman announced his decision to dismiss almost 200 DWI cases.
Spokesperson for Albuquerque police Gilbert Gallegos stated that Officer Montaño, who recently resigned, had failed to attend any of several scheduled interviews. Despite attempts made by KOAT to obtain an interview with Police Chief Medina about Montaño’s resignation, Gallegos conveyed that the department had no additional comments.
