Former Connecticut police officer Robert Ferraro has been given a two-year minimum prison sentence after a fatal DUI crash in Las Vegas that took the life of another police officer. The sentence was handed down by Clark County District Judge Susan Johnson on January 9. Ferraro, under the influence of alcohol, was involved in the deadly accident back in 2021. His lawyer, Gabriel L. Grasso, verified the verdict, stating Ferraro could serve between two to five years for the DUI that resulted in the deadly accident.
Details released by FOX 5 in Las Vegas unveiled that after Ferraro’s plea of guilty on June 21, 2023, the initial charge of reckless driving was dropped. The court instructed Ferraro to pay a $2,000 fine. The accident happened on September 17, 2021, when Ferraro was involved in a two-car accident near W. Spring Mountain Road and S. Decatur Boulevard. Cops at the scene noted signs of Ferraro being under the influence of alcohol and he was subsequently sent to Clark County Detention Center for further testing.
While traveling at a high speed, Ferraro lost control of his 2020 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, leading to a series of crashes causing substantial damage. Officer Joshua Castellano was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Other passengers, including officers Matthew Borges and John Truhart, only suffered minor injuries.
Aside from the on-site evidence, investigators relied on the video footage from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Fusion Watch Center depicting the vehicle speeding to the intersection right before the crash.
Ferraro later resigned from his police duties and has since expressed remorse for his actions. His parole eligibility begins in January 2026. Joshua Castellano, a seven-year veteran of the police department was the officer who died in the accident. His dedication to duty extended beyond his police work into various communities in New Haven.
