A police department in Fremont, CA announced plans to conduct a DUI/license inspection operation in Union City on the coming Saturday. The exact location for the checkpoint remains undisclosed but was carefully chosen based on data indicating high incidents of accidents related to impaired driving. Sgt. Fong, a representative for the police department, emphasized that impaired drivers pose a significant threat to public safety.
The checkpoints aim to reinforce traffic safety by identifying and removing suspects under the influence of alcohol, certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana, despite its legality for medicinal and recreational purposes. A first-time DUI charge can lead to approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, as per the police department.
The checkpoint operation funding comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, procured through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
