Suffolk Officer Hurt in DWI Crash, Second Drunk Driver Hits Patrol Car

An officer from the Suffolk County Police was hurt when his patrol vehicle was hit by a drunk driver whilst investigating another drink-driving accident in Dix Hills early on Thursday, according to police reports. The officer had initially responded to a crash wherein a 2023 Hyundai had hit a pole at the intersection of East Jericho Turnpike and Dix Hills Road at 4 a.m. The driver, Dimitrios Thomopoulos, 27, from Old Westbury, was arrested for driving under the influence but sustained no injuries. While waiting for the Hyundai to be towed, the officer’s patrol car was rear-ended by a 2016 Mini Cooper, blocking traffic. The officer was hospitalized, treated for his injuries, and subsequently released. James Byrne, 56, the driver of the Mini Cooper from Huntington, was also treated for injuries from the accident and charged with drunk driving. The report was made by John Asbury, a reporter for Newsday who has been with the publication since 2014.
