COLORADO – St. Patrick’s Day is not only a day of celebration but also becomes a significant issue due to drunk driving. This holiday is marked as the most occupied day with DUI crashes, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) in 2023.
Together with the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), CSP urges the public to opt for different forms of transportation instead of driving intoxicated. During St. Patrick’s Day in 2023, there were 1,994 accidents involving impaired drivers in Colorado.
Local law enforcement has been recognized for its considerable efforts in controlling DUI incidents. Col. Mathew C. Packard, the Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, took a stance on this issue, advising people to act responsibly. He cited that St. Patrick’s Day of previous years saw many intoxicated driving accidents. Col. Packard also highlighted the severity of DUI consequences. Not only does it reduce reaction time, leading to potential accidents, it is also a significant factor in one-third fatal crashes in Colorado.
Col. Packard emphasized that these unfortunate incidents are avoidable — everyone could help by offering sober rides to their friends and family or turning down rides from suspected impaired drivers.
