Shane Bunn, a much-loved football coach, was honored by family and friends at Lindhurst High School on Friday night, following his tragic death in a suspected DUI hit-and-run incident. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Feather River Road near Murphy Road on February 28, while Bunn was attempting to overtake two vehicles going in the same direction. A fourth vehicle sideswiped the two vehicles and then slammed into Bunn’s vehicle, causing it to roll down a slope and crash into a concrete drain. Bunn was pronounced dead at the scene.
Former player, Anthony Loera, expressed that this was a major loss, not only for the football community but the entire local community as well. As mourners shared memories and prayers, they painted a picture of Bunn as a dedicated husband, father, and coach who always went the extra mile for his players. Assistant coach John Tipton likened him to a bus for always taking players home and bringing them to training, effectively serving as a surrogate parent.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office has apprehended 50-year-old Larry Lee Anderson Jr., a person previously arrested for DUI a month prior to this fatal crash. He is being held without bail and could face charges of second-degree murder, driving under the influence resulting in injury, and felony hit-and-run. His pending court appearance is on March 13, 2024. Bunn is survived by his wife and daughter.
