During the annual Super Bowl weekend DWI enforcement initiative by the New York State Police, approximately 7,000 tickets were given out and 139 individuals were detained for drunk driving. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee financially backed the crackdown, which was enforced between February 9 and 11 by both state and local police authorities. Last year, the initiative resulted in over 8,300 tickets and the arrest of 141 drunk drivers. This year, 933 tickets were issued in the local Troop D Region alone. The offences included speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations and other moving violations. There were no fatal accidents during the campaign this year, though there were 245 accidents in total, leading to injuries for 37 individuals.
