LIV Golfer Arrested for DUI in NC

Harold Varner III, a golfer for the LIV Golf League, was arrested on Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina for misdemeanor drunk driving. According to ESPN, Varner had enjoyed the holiday celebrations a bit excessively. The 33-year-old golfer, native of Ohio but raised in Charlotte, was apprehended at 7:24 p.m. ET after testing a .16 BAC in a breathalyzer test, twice the legal limit. He was then admitted to the Mecklenburg County jail and later released on a $500 bond.

Varner is expected to appear in court on January 19. In August 2022, he made news by switching from the PGA to LIV Golf. Varner claimed that the financial opportunity was too significant to ignore.

In an Instagram statement, he noted that the move would assure financial stability for his child and future generations. He acknowledged that his decision might cause people’s perception of him to change but asserted that he remains the same person.

Varner, who had earned roughly $11 million during his PGA tenure, had a contract with LIV worth a guaranteed $15 million. He admitted that everyone making the move to LIV was doing so for the financial gain rather than to develop the sport. In early December, Varner was transferred from Bubba Watson’s RangeGoats to Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces team.
