This report is about former NFL player Muhammad Wilkerson and a recent arrest. The report, penned by Jenna Lemoncelli, was first published on January 1, 2024.
Wilkerson, previously a defensive end for the Jets, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and illegal possession of a loaded handgun in New Jersey on December 22. This news was based on court documents that TMZ managed to obtain.
According to these documents, the 34-year-old Wilkerson was stopped by the police in Morris County at 6:41 a.m. The police found an opened bottle of Don Julio tequila and an FN 509 Tactical Handgun loaded with 11 hollow point bullets in his vehicle. The police record stated that his vehicle smelled of alcohol, and Wilkerson failed the field sobriety tests.
At the time, Wilkerson told the police he was returning from a club in New York City. The gun was bought in Florida, however, Wilkerson failed to provide adequate documentation for it, as per the police.
Wilkerson, who was born in Linden, has faced drunk driving charges twice before this incident, in 2020 and 2019. He began his professional football career after being chosen by the Jets in the first round (No. 30 overall) of the 2011 NFL draft. Wilkerson played most of his eight-year professional career with the Jets, during which he achieved 44.5 career sacks. He was a second-team All-Pro in 2013 and 2015.
Wilkerson left the Jets after securing a one-year contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2018. However, he was only able to play three games before a severe ankle injury ended his season. Since then, Wilkerson has not signed with any other team. His next court appearance related to this case is scheduled for February.
