DWI-charged Hidalgo County deputy accused of crashing into McAllen officer

An off-duty Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Sgt. Joshua C. Kaltenbach, was arrested following a collision with a McAllen police officer, with signs of intoxication present, as stated in an offense report. The accident occurred on Tuesday on North 23rd Street. Sgt. Maria Dolores of the McAllen Police Department reported the “minor accident,” stating Kaltenbach had hit her vehicle from behind at a stoplight. Dolores told the responding officer, who noticed Kaltenbach’s slurred speech and the smell of alcohol, that she suspected Kaltenbach was drunk. Kaltenbach denied feeling the impact of the crash and said he was heading to a nearby Dairy Queen. After failing two field sobriety tests and refusing to give a breath or blood sample, Kaltenbach was arrested for drunk driving. Following the incident, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office put Kaltenbach on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation. He was later released on a $2,000 bond.
