The Houma Police Department reported responding to a vehicular collision on March 26, 2024, at 4:15 p.m. Upon their arrival, they found a FedEx delivery truck, owned by the Memphis-based multinational courier, had veered off the road and crashed into a house. Despite people being present at the house during the incident, no injuries were reported.
The driver of the FedEx truck was identified as 31-year-old Michael Smith, who was apprehended at the scene for failing a field sobriety test. Despite his reluctance to cooperate with the police officers or submit to a breathalyzer test to assess his level of inebriation, he was taken for a blood draw at a medical center.
During their investigation, the police discovered Smith in possession of an open alcoholic beverage, marijuana, and Tramadol, a schedule IV narcotic. The Houma Police charged Smith with a first offense of driving while intoxicated (DWI), possession of marijuana, possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle, possession of a schedule IV narcotic, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting an officer.
ABC24 has reached out to FedEx for a response regarding the incident.
