ALTO DE VELEFIQUE, Spain (AP) — Damiano Caruso received the ninth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, with Primoz Roglic ending second to maintain the general lead.
Caruso was in entrance for the final 70 kilometers (43 miles) of the 188-kilometer (116-mile) journey from Puerto Lumbreras to a summit end atop the beyond-category Alto de Velefique.
Caruso was coming off a second-place end general on the Giro d’Italia, his greatest end but at a Grand Tour race.
“It’s unimaginable for me to realize this after the Giro,” stated Caruso, the Italian rider for Bahrain Victorious. “The final climb was so lengthy. I knew it was getting tight. I targeted alone tempo. Once we did the previous couple of kilometers, I spotted I had an opportunity to win.”
Caruso completed greater than a minute forward of Roglic, the Vuelta’s two-time defending champion. Enric Mas was third, crossing the road simply behind Roglic.
Roglic’s sturdy end gave him a 28-second hole to Mas within the general standings. Miguel Angel Lopez was third general, greater than a minute behind Roglic.
Riders have their first relaxation day on Monday forward of a principally flat stage with a single mountain move close to the top.
“We deserve the remainder day,” Roglic stated. “It was a tough day. Once more it was tremendous sizzling, with some huge climbs so I’m wanting ahead to tomorrow (Monday). It’s the start. Now we now have the remainder day and we have to keep in a single piece with the complete crew and I’m wanting ahead to the subsequent phases.”
The three-week Grand Tour race finishes at Santiago de Compostela.
