In Puyallup, Washington, a man suspected of drunk driving is thought to have hit and killed a pedestrian on Tuesday morning. Puyallup Police and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue officials responded to a call about a truck crashing into a Walgreens on South Meridian Street at around 9:19 a.m.
As first responders made their way to the scene, they were informed that reports had come in about a passenger being ejected from the truck before it hit the building. The victim was reportedly found on the east side of South Meridian. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Puyallup, was questioned by police and then taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide.
Upon arrival, police and medics found a severely injured and unconscious man in a flowerbed, but despite their efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators revealed that the victim was not a passenger in the truck, but was instead walking on a South Meridian sidewalk when the suspect’s truck struck him from behind.
The driver then proceeded to cross all lanes of traffic and collide with the Walgreens. Afterwards, he was incarcerated in the Pierce County Jail. The identity of the victim will be determined by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office in collaboration with investigators.
